What is transposing? Moving chords to another key

Transposing moves every chord of a song by the same interval into another key. How half steps work, transposing with a capo, and finding the right key for your voice.

What does transposing mean?

Transposing moves every chord and note of a song by the same interval, taking the song into another key. The relationship between the melody and the chords stays the same; the song just sounds higher or lower.

Why transpose?

The most common reason is the voice: in its original key a song may sit too high or too low for the singer. Sometimes the instrument decides; some keys are much easier on guitar with open chords. That is also why male and female singers often perform the same song in different keys.

How half steps work

Western music has twelve half steps in an octave: C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F#, G, G#, A, A#, B. To transpose, you move the root of every chord the same number of steps up or down this row. The chord quality does not change: a minor chord stays minor, a seventh chord stays a seventh.

Example: move Am – Dm – E up two half steps and you get Bm – Em – F#. A# is the same pitch as Bb; the key of the song decides which spelling to use.

Watch the bass notes

In slash chords like D/F#, the bass note moves by the same amount. Two half steps up, D/F# becomes E/G#. Moving the chord but forgetting the bass note is the most common mistake.

Transposing with a capo

On guitar, a capo is the most practical way to transpose. With the capo on the second fret, everything you play with the same chord shapes sounds two half steps higher: an Am shape gives a Bm sound. That way you can play awkward keys with the open chords you know.

How to find the right key

Look for the key where you can comfortably sing both the highest and the lowest note of the song. Try the chorus in a few different keys; when your voice sounds strong without straining, you are in the right place. Write the key next to the song so you do not have to search again.

In Reperto the key of a song is detected for you, and you transpose it to any key with a single tap.
